Within Pakistan’s small fashion industry, some designers have recently implemented some of these practices in their production and distribution processes, whether in dyeing at the very early stage of making garments or in using the proceeds for charitable causes.
Frieha Altaf, the stalwart of Pakistani fashion and the CEO of Catwalk Event Management and Productions, says many designers with rising consciousness are doing their part in implementing ethical practices. She cites the example of Sehyr Saigol’s initiative in which the designer works with Swati women on the revival of local embroidery. According to Altaf, the focus on preserving indigenous crafts, along with encouraging self-sufficiency among communities, is essential to the long-term sustainability of Pakistan’s fashion industry.
